OLD BOYS v. MARIST BROS.
The game between these two teams 'at Lancaster Park resulted in good, hard-fought play, Old Boys winning by 15 points to 3. Long kicks by Carlton and Mahoney removed play to Old Boys' territory, a mark by H. Taylor bringing relief. From a loose passing rush Murfitt scored for Marists, the kick failing. Whites' forwards worked down, offsido piay spoiling a likely chance, and Marists were forced. From the dropout Old Boys at once attacked, Bain having an unsuccessful shot from a penalty. On changing ends AVhites again attacked, faulty passing losing chances. Boag at this stage was hurt, and retired, Byrne taking his place. From a scrum near the lino E. Taylor dodged over, the kick failing. Whites continued on the aggressive, Marist Brothers being forced twice in succession.
On resuming, Whites, headed by Parsou, rushed down, a force resulting. Marists then worked down, hut J. Guthrie dribbling back, scored, the kick again failing:. Bain returned the drop out well down, and Guthrie, with a shot at goal, forced Marists. Bain again gave Old Boys an opening with good kicking. Guthrie compelled Greens to force. Old Boys rushed down, Dougall getting over from'a loose rush, the kick being unsuccessful. Rushes by Whites' backs had Marists busy defending. At tho start of tho last quarter, pay centred, Taylor eventually forcing Marists with a long kick. Offside play let Marists up, Taylor kicking hack to the line. Marists were forced twice in quick succession
by long kicks. Fast following up enabled J. Guthrie to score his second try. Wilson failing with the kick. Carlton kicked well down. Guthrie, with a good run, taking the ball back. T. Crawshaw kicked a goal from a penalty. Syme headed a rush to Marists' territory, a force resulting. Marists livened up, and got down to Whites' line, but Parson headed a rush back, and Marists were again forced. Mr G. S. Matthews was referee.
