SYDENHAM v. LINWOOD.
This game occupied the west ground at Lancaster Park. Play was v chiefly confined to the forwards, in which department Linwood were slightly superior to their opponents, but tho Sydonliam hacks moro than made amends for this by saving their forwards a tremendous amount of work by their judicious lino kicking. There wore a few splendid passing rushes that tended to mako the game a more spectacular one, but the ground was very slippery, players having much difficulty in keeping on their feet.
The Sydenham forwards followed up a high kick by Doell, and had Linwood penned on their lino, where from a scrum tho ball was kicked to Doell, who sent a long, pass to •Howison. Tho latter passed it to Smith, who when tackled sent it back again to Howison, and tho latter mado a strong dash for the line, the, Greens being compelled to force. A splendid individual dribbling effort by Cummings took play right to Sydenham s twenty-five, where Caldwell set his backs "going, Payne scoring a good try at tho corner. He took the kick himself, but failed to convert. Tho Cardinals now livened up, and.aided by a long kick by Watson, they again had Linwood hard pressed. In a scramble on tho line Smith dashed un and scored near tho corner. Doell's kick at goal was a good though unsuccessful one. A centre kick by Fraser was well followed by Watson and Campbell, and they took the ball over the line, Campbell scoring "in a good position. Doell converted. A splendid dribbling rush, headed by Harvey, transferred the scene of operations to Sydenham's twenty-five, whero Picrcy mado a splendid opening and a nice passing rush ended in Prosper scoring at the corner. Dingle failed at goal. Watson marked right in front of the Linwood goal, but Doell kicked a poster. On changing over for the last quarter, Sydenham set up a hot attack, but Watsonr was obstructed when looking dangerous. Auld and Fraser headed a splendid rush to tho Sydenham line, where Campbell fell on the ball, scoring his second try. .Watson failed to convert. A clever cross-kick by Watson was well fielded by Smith, who put in a strong dash, and when tackled sent a good pass to Howison, who scored near tho corner. Auld failed to convert. Mr F. T. Evans was referee.
