THE TERRITORIAL SCHEME.

AUCKLAND, May 27.
A large gathering of military officers assembled at the Garrison Club rooms last night to welcome his Excellency the Governor.
Colonel Wolfe extended a warm welcome to his Excellency, as a seasoned soldier .who had fought for the Empire and gained distinction in the held.
Lord Islington said that our military organisation had opened a new chapter in the history of New Zealand, and also formed a solid foundation for the universal effort which was. being made throughout the wholo Empire. Ho congratulated the Dominion on having as commandant, General Godlej', an ofiker possessing three great qualities— tact, ability and energy, all necessary in a successful soldier. The officers at headquarters and in the various districts wero also showing much ability in their work. The scheme was now in mid-stream, and gave every prospect of success. He was a great believer in the Territorial scheme, which was not an aggressive mihtaiy scheme, but the most peaceful of all ariangements that could ho mado under any system. He promised the officers all the support he could while Governor, and hoped that they would keep in constant touch with him, and come to him in full confidence in the Garrison Officers' Club, or in camp.
