A MINIMUM WAGE.
Mr Will Crooks's amendment in favour of legislative establishment of a minimum Wage of thirty shillings weekly for every adult worker was talked out. Mr H. J. Tennant, Secretary to the Board of Trade, said that the Government was unable to accept the amendment, inasmuch as such legislation was in defiance of all economic laws, and would prove disastrous. He calculated that the legislation would involve an annual charge of £88,000,000. They must leave tho settlement of rates of wages to the free play of economic forces.
