NEW BRIGHTON
The New Brighton Domain Board met on Monday night. Present—Messrs W. Bellamy (chairman)," G. E. Goodwin, H. E. Hargreaves, J. B. Scoble, J. Buxton, S. Bruce, L. Hopkins, .(.. Withell and G. W. Sellars. Mr L. Hopkins presented a report of the subcommittee regarding the re-plantiug of the portion of the Domain destroyed by fire, recommending that tenders should be called for tho cutting down of all the burnt and damaged trees, and cutting up land stacking the wood from same, also that a competent expert should be employed to sketch out the scheme of re-planting. The chairman submitted a plan of the Domain, showing adjacent roads, and these, he pro*>osed, should be extended through the Domain and planted on either side with suitable trees, to prevent a fire spreading through th© Domain in future. The plan also included a scheme of subdivision of part of the Recreation Reserve to provide building'sites, which might be leased at an average annual rental of £5, which would provide something like £300 per annum. The estimated cost of the reading would be about £1000. The chairman also expressed the opinion that the New Brighton reserves were far too large for the borough, and some of them should be utilised, if possible, to bring in a revenue by letting on lease fcr a term of years. Mr L. Hopkins pointed out that t!i6 Council could not lease any of its reserve for a longer period than one year, and no building was permitted on them. After some further discussion it was deoided that the chairman and Mr L. Hopkins should draw* up a further report for submission to a special meeting of the Board, to be held next Friday night.
