(Before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M.) One first offender was fined 5s and costs, or in default 24 hours' imprisonment. John Stevens, with two previous conwctions within six months, was fined 20s, in default seven days , imprisonment. Harry Brown, with one previous conviction, was fined 10s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. An elderly man named William Mitchell, an old age pensioner, was charged with being an idle and disorderly person, and with having insufficient means of support. Frederick Truscott (Mr Leathern) claimed £5 from J. Thompson (Mr Ca§sidy) for damages to a hired horse, caused by neglect. Plaintiff stated that !ie hired the horse to defendant for a week, but it was returned in three days with a very sore back. Since that time he had been unable to work the horse. Evidence was called as to the poor state of the horse when returned. It had evidently been badly harnessed. For the defence it was j contended that the horse was a blood animal, and unsuited to the _ work it had to do. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £3 and costs. Vernall (Mr Cassidy), being sixteen weeks' rent of a house at Opawa, a month's rent in lieu of notice, and £3 12s 6d for damages done to tha property. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £22 10s and costs. The claim for damages was disallowed. LYTTELTON. (Before Captain R. Bafohwell, J. P.) A first offender, charged with drunkenness, was convicted and fined os and costs. KAIAPOI. (Before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M.) H. Crimmond denied a charge of using threatening language. Evidence was given that he went into a fruiterer's shop on Saturday evening in mi inebriated 'state, and challenged three persons to fight. He~was fined 10s, with 7s costs. Ballinger and Cassidy, of WoDdend and Kaiapoi ('Mr Conlan), were sued by the Inspector of Awards, claiming £10 for breach of the Christchurch butchers' (country) award, in having employed n youth under twenty at 20s per week, the amount under the award being 30s. Mr L. D. Browertt, Inspector,/ prosecuted. After hearing evidence, the- Magistrate inflicted a penalty of 10s, and ordered payment of the Inspector's costs.
