"PRESS" EOAI> BACE

In beautiful weather tho annual road race of the "Press" employees was held on Saturday afternoon. Of the 26 entries, 21 riders faced the starter, the limit man getting away punctually. The course was from Coach Corner, Riccarton, to Halkett and back, a distance of lo miles. The judges were Messrs A.M. Burns, F.J. Board and H.D. Pine. Mr T. H Harkcr acted as starter, and Messrs A. AI. Hester and T. H. Harker acted as timekeepers. The success of the event was in a very large measure due to the energetic efforts of the joint secretaries, Messrs F. Walls and K. Thompson. The race resulted as follows: — E. C. Jones (omin), 47mm oouec ... 1 A. Bills (7mm), 50mm SOsec ... 2 B. Hosking (omin), 49min 47seo ... 3 S. Clarke (3min), 49min 36min ... 4 Agassiz, Johnston and Cr. Whfte finished in that order. The winner also put up the fastest time. B. Johnston takes the prize for the fastest time for any rider under 18 years of age, doiiig J the course in 49min 17sec. The prize the boy under 18 first completing the course, and not receiving any other prize, was won by F. Agassiz. The committee tender then- hearty tlianke for prizes given by the following :—Dunlop Tyre Co., set of first grade tyres (won by E. C. Jones) for fastest time, also Messrs Adams, Ltd., Adnams Bros., Bell Bros.. AngloSpecial Cycle Co. (J. Philp, manager), Messrs John Burns, D. M. Bain, and J. MeClintock for various trophies and prizes. Messrs Adams, Ltd., very kindly placed a largo 12-22 Clement Talbot car at the disposal of tho officials. It was in charge of Mr F. Waller, and proved of great service, hastening to the scene of the accident which befel one of the competitors and bringing in the injured man. YOUTHS' RACE. A race for youths under 19 years of age was run under the allspices of the Christchnrch Cycling Club on Saturday afternoon. , Out of 36 who entered 34 started, the course being from Coach Corner, Riccarton, to about throe miles beyond West Melton, and back, a dtstanco of 25 mile*. The start was delayed by the club officials for a little while, to permit the "Press" race to finish. The race resulted as follows: — J. Linton (4imin), lhr llmin 48 3-sth sco, 1; S. E. Forrester (3* mm), lhr lOmin. 49 &6th sec), 2; H. V. Worsfold (4|min), lhr llmin 50 3-sth sec, 3; R. A. Allen (4min), lhr 12min 44sec), 4. Fastest time, E. Wall (scr), lhr Omin COsec; second fastest time, W. T. Kerr (scr), lhr 9min 60 2-sth, sec. ' •,.,'■' The following course has been select ed by the* Christclrarch Cycling and Motdr Club for the second event of the "Dunlop Series/ which is to be run next Saturday afternoon, December 10th. starting at 2.30 p.m. from the junction of the Frebbleton and Hornby roads, just over the Socbburn railway crossing, proceeding through Hornby to Springston, crossing the Selwyn bridge and on through Irwell to DoyleEton, .turning at the flag-point, and returning over the same course. In addition ,to the Dnnlop Rubber Company's handsome trophy, the following special prizes will be awarded: —First £5, second £3. third £1, and for the fastest -unplaced rider a set of Dunlop road racing tyres. William Martin, at one time known throughout the cycling world as "Plugger Bill," a champion cyclist, is afc present spending a holiday in Southland, ifr. Martin has not been enjoying it© best of health during the past iew months, and is -visiting the Dominion in search of health.
