THE PROPOSED FENDALTON TOWN DISTRICT.

to the edito- or "the pbess." Sj- __i hope the ratepayers of the Fendalton district will not Le so blind to their own interests as to sign the petition advocated by tho chairman of tho recent meeting of ratepayers, to form the Fendalton district into a separate governing body, or Town lioard, with all its extravagant and unnecessary ofincials and paraphernalia, nominally to secure the expenditure in the district of tho rates raised m it, which could be easily done by merely

allocating the rates raised in that district towards meeting any of its necessary and fair requirements. We were told the formation of the Waimairi County Council was intended to combine various governing bodies, and so reduce the administrative expenditure, and economise in every possible way, but all these cheerful prospects seem to be rapidly vanishing, for no sooner is the Riccarton Road District absoroed into the new county than the most Socialistic principles are initiated; tirst by raising a large loan to carry out works that are quite unnecessary * and secondly, by cutting the district up into small Town Boards, and wasting the rates in official salaries and other expenditure. The less wo havo of tv'S Socialism of borrowing and squandering, and the sooner we resume th. economical and efficient administration of the old Riccarton Road Board, tbe better for all of us.—Yours, etc., A RATEPAYER.
