Mr James Cowan, late of tho Tourist Department, and formerly of the Auckland "Star," has been appointed sub-editor of tho "Free Lance,"' in place ol Mr Glanxille Hicks, who has taken a newspaper at Rotorua.

Tho police have ascertained that tho explosives discovered in the grounds of the Catholic Church in Webb street wero taken from a quarry at Xgahauranga. Mr Douald Buchanan, brother of Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.P., died at Hawem on Friday, aged 79 years. He had been a resident of tho Hawcra district for thirty-four years. He leaves a widow, two daughters and two sons.

Tho'Hon. E. Hiehardson, C.M.G., is about to retire from the position of general manager and secretary of the Wellington Patent Slip Company, ■which he has held for many years. The secretarial duties in connection with tho slit> will be carried out by Mr T. R. Tripe, accountant in tho Union Steam Ship Company's office here.

It lias boon generally understood in the police force that Inspector Culleiif of Auckland, is to he appointed Chief Inspector, but apparently thero is no immediate intention of making such an appointment; When it becomes necessary to appoint a Chief Inspector, the chances are that Inspector Cullen may bo offered the position.

Colonel H. D. Tusou, Adjutant and Quartonuaster-Goncral of tho Xew Zealand 3>fence forces, has i'eft for England, where he will re-join his regiment —the Dnko of Cornwall Light Infantry. Tho duties of his department aro at present being undertaken by the Chief of the General Staff (Colonel A. W. Robin, C.8.), but it is understood the appointment will be conferred on Liout.-Colonel E. W. Chaytor, who is at present discharging tho duties of Director-General of Military Education, pending the arrival of a ; staff officer from tho Imperial General Staff in England.
