NEW ZEALAND PRODUCE IN LONDON.

("Weekly Press and Referee.")

, WOOL TRADE BUSY. Messrs W. Weddel say that the prin- ' ci,pal feature of tho wool market coni tinues to be tho large and healthy de- , mand for all classes of produce. Fresh business is, as is natural, somewhat restricted, owing to the present high values, but there ere so many eld orders to be executed that prices are very firm indeed, and, in the case of merinos there is a. tendency towards stil l higher rates. The.Home trade in tine wools is particularly busy. Cross--1 breds keep very steady. Direct importations are coming in freely now. ' but all are wanted, and combers are very fully employed. Reports from America, however, are not so encouraging, business there bung considerably restricted, manufacturers finding some difficulty in selling their This notwithstanding the demand from the Continent and Home trade holds out prospects of a strong market next series. GRAIN. New Zealand Wheat—Messrs Weddel say that stocks have not boon replenished. -Supplies of English wheat huve been pretty liberal, and values are about 6d .per quarter lower. The average price last week of 33s per Imperial quarter marks ci decline of 7d per quarter from the previous fortnight, and is 13 Id per quarter below that at the same time last year. New Zealand Outs —The demand is restricted, ond quotations are the turn in. favour of buyers, especially in the lower quality oats. Cartons range from 19s to 225, Star row bills from 18s Gd to 20s Gd. Thins from ISs Cd to 19s Gd. and Daniih from 17s to 18s per 320!b Peas—There is only little enqniry. though the small stock on hand permits of prices being maintained at about 51s to Gls per 50lib for New Zealand Maples or Partridge \xos. TALLOW. During the last fourteen days the demand for tallow has been gocd, and a large business has come about, chiefly in material for shipment, a.s supplies continue meagre on the .spot. Messrs Weddel say that the demand has been impartially on nearly all descriptions, but good colour mixed is the most saleable description, no doubt. with a view to exporting to Russia in the spring. On c.i.f. terms 43£ dog. pood mixed has been sold at from 33s to 33s 9d, and there are still buyers at 33s 6d per cwt. Mutton tallow lias been more readily saleable; ordinary low titre sorts at round about 345, while hard sorts have made up to 35s per cwt. Good beef is very scarce, but would bo saleable at from 34s to 34.-; Gd c.i.f. London. Spot quotations I for New Zealand and Australian descriptions are :—Mutton, good to finest, 34s to 38s ,tft>r cwt: dull to fair, 3a? to 33s 6d; inferior, 31s Gd to 32s Cd; beef, good to finest. 34s to 375; dull to fair, 33s to 33s 6d; inferior, 30s Gd to 31s Gd. NEW ZEALAND MEAT. Canterbury sheep continue to be very scarce, and 4gd per lb is still obtainable for tho 481b to fUlb grade. The heavier weights have been sold at 4d to 4jd per lb. Prime North Island carcases sell Jowly at 3_d to 3ld. Secondary descriptions on a good demand are firmer, and are now quoted at 3Jd to 3jd per lb. The few ewes available sell at 3id to 3Jd per lb. Messrs Weddel gives as the arrivals for the last fortnight carcases from New Zealand. With small arrivals of lambs from the colonies during the fortnight—2B,ooo carcases from New Zealand and 43,000 from "Australia, in addition to 16,500 carcases from South America—it has been easy to maintain late rates. In ' fact, Australian lambs ore ?Jd higher 1 per lb than they were two weeks back. ' Messrs Weddel t>tate that there are very 1 few Canterbury lambs available, : andj < in consequence of high prices ruling for ] tome-killed mutton and lamb, the same j have found a ready sale at 5Jd to s|d 1 per lb. Wellington Meat* Export Com- ' pany's lambs are quoted at 5d to 5Jd 1 per lb, while other brands of North 1 Island lambs are on offer at 4sd 1 to 5d per lb. There has been a good ] enquiry for Australian descriptions, 1 t-upplies of which are becoming short. ] Prime Australian lambs are quoted at •, 4sd per lb, and secondary descriptions ' at 4d to 4id per lb. All through the past fortnight there 1 has been a brisk demand for frozen j beef j and with lighter supplies of chilled 1 ieat, values for the former have im- .. proved by about Jd to 3-16 d per lb for i both fcrequarteis . and hindquarters. Messrs Weddel give as the fortnight's { total arrivals 8000 quarters from Aus- '. tralia, the t>ame number from New Zea- ■ land t and 47,500 quarters from South J America. *
