TENNIS.
CANTERBURY v. WELLINGTON.
The annual fixture between representatives of Canterbury and Wellington took place on Saturday on the United Club's courts in favourable weather conditions. The wind was somewhat troublesome, but not to any great extent. The courts were in excellent order.
The Singles were decided in the morning. Details are as follows, Canterbury players being given first: : — G. Ollivier heat J. C. Peacock 2-6, 6-3, 6-5; W. Goss beat C. F. Quinnell 6-0, 6-4; R. D. Harman beat R. St. J. Beere 1-6, 6-0, 6-2: W\ H. Kiver beat F. P. Wilson 6-2, 6-3; T. R. Quill lost to F. M. B. Fisher 2-6, 6-2, 2-6. lost to F. M. B. Fisher 2-6, 6-2, 256; Borrows beat Salmond, 4-6, 6-5, 6-2.
In the afternoon the Doubles were played in the presence of a good attendance. Chief interest centred in the game in which Fisher and Peacock (Wellington) met Goss and Ollivier (Canterbury). The players gave an excellent exposition of the game, but the combination of the Wellington representatives was too strong for the Canterbury men, and, despite good work by both, they lost to Wellington. Results are as follow (Canterbury players given first): —Borrows and Kiver beat Quinnell and Salmond, 2-6, 6-5, 6-1; GofJ3 and Ollivier lost to Peacock and Fisher, 6-2, 4-6, 3-6, 4-6; Quill and Harman beat Beere and Wilson, 6-5, 6-2; Borrows and Kiver beat Wilson and Beere, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0; Goss- and Ollivier lost to Peacock and Fisher, 0-6, 4-6, 5-6; Harman and Quill lost to Salmond and Quinnell, 6-3, 6-5, 2-6 < 2-6, 1-6.
Canterbury won by eir-ht matches to four.
In the evening the visitors were entertained at dinner at the Clarendon Hotel, and left later for Wellington. THE EASTER TOURNAMENT. The programme for the Canterbury Association's Easter tournament having been approved by the New Zealand Association, is at present in the hands of the printer and will be issued shortly. The tournament will be held on the United Club's courts on March 25th, 26th, 28th, and 29th, and entries for the handicap events close on March 11th and for the championship events on March 18th.
WAIAU CLUB
_A tennis match was played on the Waiau courts on Wednesday between teams representing the Township and tho Bush, and resulted in a win for thc Township team. Scores :—Township 165, Bush 161. Afternoon tea was supplied by the ladies of the towrship. A return match will be played at an early date.
WEEDONS CLUB
The cpening of the Weedons Tennis i Club was held on Thursday afternoon j under perfect weather conditions. Mr ! G. Watson, of West Melton, opened the court. There was a large gathering, including members of the West Melton and Rolleston Clubs, and visitors from Christchurch. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies of the district.
