The financial session of the Canterbury District Methodist Synod was oneiied on Wednesday, the Rev. C. H. Garland presiding. An invitation was received and accepted from Mr and Mrs J. A. Flesher to a garden ,party on Thursday afternoon, at their residence, '"Avebury," Richmond. It. was agreed to relieve Malvern of its obligation for another year of taiwiig a married minister. Tlie Rev. W. Baumber moved tho appointment of a probationer at Timaru instead of a home missionary, as at present; no grant from the funds would be asked ior. This was agreed to. Kaiapoi sought relief from the obligation of taking a second married minister. It was agreed that upon tho circuit steward agreeing to undertake tlie responsibility next year and the exigencies of Conference appointments permitting, the relief sought be granted. The Rev. C. 11. Garland moved, and it was resolved:—-'That the Three Kings College Committee l>e requested to nrepare a scheme for tho raising of funds in order to erect necessary additional buildings." The work of the Principal, the Rev. J. H. Simmonds, wa> eulogised, and his re-appointment was unanimously recommended to Conference. Notices of appreciation wore accorded the Rev. J. Burton and Mr VV. C. Francis, for* their advocacy of the Foreign Mission claims during tho year. The Rev. C. H. Laws, 8.A., moved tho best thanks of the Synod to the Ladies' Auxiliary League, for the splendid efforts made by them during the year. The home mission effort for the year showed a decided upward tendency, the estimates for next year giving an increase of nearly 50 per cent, for tlie district. The following grants were recommended from the Home Mission Fund :—Addington £35, Willowby £20, Malvern £25, Amberley £30. Assisted circuits: Oxford £20, Banks Peninsula £20, special for this year and £10, Methven £20. The Rev. H. E. Bcllhouse was elected to the position of district representative to Conference in February next, and the Rev. C. Abcrnethy substitute representative.
