BASE IN THE IRISH SEA.
(Received July 6th, 10.40 p.m.) LONDON, July 6. The Committee of Imperial Defence has chosen Belfast Lough as a northern base for warships defending the Irish Sea in war timo. A battleship of the Magnificent class, a cruiser of the Boadicea type, and a flotilla of destroyers and submarines will be stationed there.
Th© Magnificent type is an old one, and in a year or two may be relegated the scrap-heap. The Magnificent was completed in 1895. She is a vessel of 14,900 tons, with a speed of 17.5 knots. The Boadiceas are a new class of scout, from 3300 and 4800 tons, wifch a speed of 25 knots. The Boadicea completed her trials a couple of months ago, and was said to have shown herself a very wet ship—in fact she beliaved so badly with her great speed in rough weather that most of tho crew were sick.
