NORTH CANTERBURY.
There was heavy rain in tho Ashley County yesterday. Tho rainfall at Kaiapoi for tho twenty-four hours ending 9.30 a.m. was .42in, and before evening the total fall was equal to about an inch. The rain is very acceptable; it increased the price of sheep at the Oxford sale, and the milk suppliers state that it has increased the quantity given by their cows. On rape and turnip lands it is almost too late to revive the prospects of the older crops; but more recent turnip sowings will benefit by tho moisture. On the stubbio the greenness which was produced early in February as a result of the January rain is being restored. The sombre grass lands which had been in evidence for two or three weeks will soon show a brighter tinge. Upon the loose surface of the roads a great improvement has taken place.
