Tho Duko of Sutherland presided at a meeting for the x>urpose of inaugurating a scheme for a Fort'h-Clydo canal, at an estimated cost of 17 millions. Tho canal would enable tho construction of shipbuilding and repairing yards on. Loch Lomond, twelve miles outside tho possible range of gun-fire. Tho work woulel employ 30,000 workmen for a perioel of nine years. Tlie Duke of Argyll and Lord Brassey supported tho scheme.
