SCULLING.
FOGWELL v WHELCH
Our Akaroa correspondent writes:— Splendid weather prevails, the harbour being as smooth as class. Both men are training with regularity, and do a solid, steady pull over the full course once a day at least. The. course lias been fixed from the Maori kaik at Onuku to Daly's wharf, Akarca. Arnst, the champion, returned from Duneclin on Tuesday afternoon, and immediately fiot to work pacing Fogwcll, who, under the capable care of his trainer Floyd, is moving well in his new Towns boat, with which he expresses every satisfaction. Whelch is rapidly getting into form, and Webb, his pacer and trainer, sti + es hi- is well pleased with his charge. Wednesday being a particularly calm day, both scullers with their pacers took advantage of the conditions to do the full distance. Whelch and Webb-took the water first, covering the course steadily, the former rowing 28 with a short, finish of 30, the latter 24. P'ogwell ami the champion followed a quarter of an hour later, both pulling 24. Webb's arm has very much im proved during the last fortnight, nnd he is scuUinji admirably. He speaks highly of the course. The boat ordered by Whelch from Geo. Norton, of Wellington, did not come to hand on Tuesday as expected, and he is now using Webb's for his training.
