Some kapoc in the factory of Messrs W. E. Mundy and Son, Colombo street, caught tire by some unexplained means yesterday afternoon, and in response to an alarm by telephone -shortly before three o'clock, the motor chemical from Lichfield street, and a hand reel from tho Sydenham station, turned out. The outbreak was got uixliT by tho aid of -water from the Sydenham main. The building was slightly, and the contents severely injured by tho fire. There wero no insurances.

A cottage situated" on the- Wakaonui road, Ashburton, owned by Mr D. Melntosh, and till a day or so ago occupied by Mrs W. R. Skattock. was totally destroyed by fire about 3.30 a.m. yesterday.
