FIRES
Some kapoc in the factory of Messrs W. E. Mundy and Son, Colombo street, caught tire by some unexplained means yesterday afternoon, and in response to an alarm by telephone -shortly before three o'clock, the motor chemical from Lichfield street, and a hand reel from tho Sydenham station, turned out. The outbreak was got uixliT by tho aid of -water from the Sydenham main. The building was slightly, and the contents severely injured by tho fire. There wero no insurances.
A cottage situated" on the- Wakaonui road, Ashburton, owned by Mr D. Melntosh, and till a day or so ago occupied by Mrs W. R. Skattock. was totally destroyed by fire about 3.30 a.m. yesterday. Tho whole- of ilbo furniture, which was packed ready to be removed yesterday, was destroyed. The cottage was nnocrapied at th> time of the fire, and tho origin is unknown at pra=ent. Tbt> building was insured in the London ami Liverpool and Globe office for £175, siikl the furniture- in the North Queensland office for £100. Mr Melnt-ech estimates his k>s*i on the foonse at £100 over and above the insurance, and Mrs ttha-ttock's loss will bo futly £30. (raESS ASSOCIATION TELEOttAU.) AUCKLAND, March 10. Tho tannery of W. Sutherland and Co., Lt-tL, at Oneihtinga, was almost oonip-fetely ttestroywl by fire late tonight. It is estimated tliot the total loss is £20,000, while the insurances amount only to between £o(X)0 antl £GOOO. WELLINGTON', March 15. A three storey building in. Victoria street, occupied by Messrs l>. W. Virtue- and Co., grain and produce merchants, was the scene of a fire last evening. Although the fiames were soon suppressed by the Brigade, a largo quantity of grain and preduco suffered damage. The insurances on the building are in the Phrenix, £2000, and on tho contents, Norwich Union, £450; machinery in the same office, £2000. Royal £500, Phcenix £750, Atlas £800. The New Zealand Flour Millers' Association, for whom M/pssrs Virtue and Co. were the. local agents, luad their stock of flour insured for £1000 in the Norwich Union.
