British expenditure on intoxicating liquor was £101,000,000 in 1908, and £167,000,000 in 1907. The output of coal in 1908 was 201,560,379 tons, a decrease of 6,306,473 tons on 1907, but 47,195 more miners were employed. In 1899 tho expenditure* on drink was £185,927,227. Then th-e.ro was a steady fall to £164,167,011 in 1905, though the pot?ulation increased by 2,600,000 in that time. The bill rose to £160,000 in 1906.
