LYTTELTON.
The Japanese deserter, K. Sando, who was employed as cabin-boy on the steamer Mortlako, and who left the steamer last Wednesday, was oharged at the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court on Saturday, before Mr G. Laurenscm, J.P., that "'being a seaman lawfully engaged on board the Mortlake, he did unlawfully desert from the same vessel. "Did you rim away from the ship.-* asked Sergeant Ryan, and the Jap. with an inscrutable expression of countenance, nodded his head and replied "Yes." Sergeant Ryan said that Mr Elliott. Collector of Customs, who waa present in court, had communicated with the Colonial Secretary regarding tho lad, who was a prohibited immigrant, and asked that he should be remanded for eight days. Arrangement? were being mado to send lam to Sydney, to be put on board tho Mortlake, and the agents of the vessel (Messrs Pitcaithly and Co.) had agreed to pay all expenses in connection therewith. The lad was then remanded for eight days. ■
