« His Excellency the Governor leaves Palmerston North on November 2nd for Canterbury, where he will attend an important Masonic celebration at Waimate as well as the Canterbury Metropolitan Show. The King's Birthday dinner this year will be given in Christchurch. Later his Excellency proposes to have a fishing holiday at Tokaanu and Taupo after the big trout. Mr Justice Denniston is expected to return to this city about tho end of the week. Sub-Inspector Dwyer, acting-Inspec-tor, Hawke's Bay district, arrived from Napier on Saturday morning on private business, and intends returning North to-morrow. Colonel Tuson, Adjutant-General ot tho New Zealand Forces, arrived in Christchurch from tho North yesterday. The Colonel, who is accompanied by Mrs Tuson, loaves for Dunedin this morning, and will spend a week thero on Defence business. He expects to return to Christehurch on Monday next, and will remain hero for a few days before returning to Wellington. Dr. Frank Hay,. Inspector-General of Mental Hospitals, arrived in Christchurch on Saturday. Ho inspected tli3 Mental Hospital at Sunnyside, and yes terday he paid a short visit to Lyttelton. Mr E. Clifton. Chief Inspector of Stock and Director of Experimental Farms, who arrived trom the West Coast on Friday evening, left on Saturday for Wellington. Mr A. Macpherson, Supervisor of Agricultural Experiments in tho South Island, left for Ashburton on Saturday evoning on his way to visit somo of tho southern stations. Mr A. W. Rutherford, M.P. (Mendip Hills) arrived in Christchurch on Saturday. Detective McGrath arrived from Wellington by the Maori on Saturday. The Rev. H. Bull and Mr Herman Lewis arrived from Wellington by the Mararoa yesterday morning. Mr and) Mrs G. W. Sampson (Greymouth) arrived from Hanmer on Saturday evening and spend somo days in this city. Mr T. E. Taylor and Captain Richardson, Chief Artillery Instructor, left for Wellington by the Maori on Saturday night. Captain R. Strang, Marine Superintendent of tho Union Steam Ship Company, Captain Mcikleham, and Colonel Loveday left for Wellington by tho •Monowai on Saturday night. Mr A. Kayo left r - ' -ckland by tho Monowai on Saturday night. •The Rev. J. Holland has derided to remain at Hanme-r, for another week. Recent arrivals in Christchurch include:—Mr E. F. Walker (Birmingham), Mr A. J. Downie (Melbourne), Mr L. Andrew ("Wellington), Mr W. Hall (Dunedin), Mr F. Haig (Dunedin), Mr C. A. Richardson, Mr H. S. Alwyn, Mr f. White, Mr and Mrs Whitney, Mr L. Lawton. Mr G. A. Findlay, Captain and -Mrs Manning (Wellington), Mr M ,M. Heinemann (Dunedin), Mr W. St. J. Clarke (Auckland), Mr S. F. B. Lewi's (Dunedin), and Mr H. J. Wynne (Wellington). Mr R. W. Percy will take chargo of the Duvauchello Post and Telegraph Office this week. Messrs George and Wallace Baxter wero the guests of the residents at Methven at a farewell social gathering last Thursday evening, and each was presented with a silver hunting watch and chain. Tho presentations were made by Mr W. J. Crooks, and his eulogistic references to the guests were supported by several leaving farmers.
