Joel unless he paid £5,00. At the trial remarkable letters wero read, showing that the writers paced as members of a Camorrist secret society. They informed 'Joel's wife that a member of tho society had b«?m chosen by lot to assassinate Joel. On seeing an advertisement in tho "Daily Chronicle" agreeing to pay, another letter was sent to Joel's wife stating that a man would call for tho money at Joel's house. When Canham called he was arrested. He oenfesred that Winborn wrote the letters and promised him (Caniham) half tho money if he assisted. Accused were both remanded, no bail being allowed.
