DUNEDIN, July 3.
A short time ago tlie New Zealand hemp industry assumed a somewhat black aspect, and in consequence of the pronounced slump in the market, flax-millers in Otago and Southland, as well as in other parts of the Dominion, found it to their advantage to dose down much earlier before the advent of winter than had hitherto been tho '■-ase. Tho prospects for the coming season are. however, very much brighter, -md throughout Otago and Southland it is the "intention of mill owners to start operations in August, a month ahead of tho usual time.
