The committee of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club has decided to endow tlio .National Handicap, tho principal harness' race at its August Meeting, with a silver :up. Tliis is being done as a commemoration of the risk of the American fleet to New Zealand. The New Zealand-owned horse Waipu (lOst 31b), who was expected to give a good account of himself in- tbo V.R.C. Grand National Hurdlo Race on Saturday, failed to show prominently at any stage of tho contort-. Doubtless the solid pace at which the race was run had him in difficulties from the start, as stamina rather than pace is his strong point. Acceptances for the Wellington Racing Club's Steeplechase Meeting close this evening.
