PHILOSOPHICAL INSTITUTE.
Tlie Canterbury Philosophical Institute met laet night, whe-n Mr E. C Hogg presided. The Cliairman said that sinoe the last meeting the Institute had lest, in tho r>ei9oa of Mr Edward , Dobson, C.E., a gentleman who had done much for the institute, of which he had been one of the founders. He moved:—''That til , ? Institute learns with regret of the death of Mr E. Dotxson, C.E., and desires to place on record its appreciation of the services he renldoivd as one of its original foundere, as -a former president, and as one of tiho re'presentativf:? on tho for sev«ra,l years."
The motion was seconded by Mr R. Speight, and carried. The Chairman said that lest;year saw tho carrying out by the Institute oi tho expedition to the Southern Islands, and .rluring the present 3 - ear tho society would have a great deal of work to carry thrcugh. There would be the issuing of the report of that expedition, a work to bt> edited by Dr. Chiiton, and the Institute was, in addition, undertaking the consideration or various scientific problems of great interest which arose in connection with the boring of the Arthur's Pass tunnel. In carrying out that work the strain on tho income of tht> Institute might be somewhat severe, but rt was work that must be done. Another work that had been very seriously taken in hand was tho formation of <a library es complete as possible of all the scientific literature relating to Antarctica. That, of course, would involve a largo *xprjiditur© of money, or>road over a number of years however, but it was a matter which affected the reputation of the Institute and therefore the members of tho Council trusted that all members of td'.e Jnftituto would do their best to co-operate with the Council in increaem<; the income by introducing new members, or :by making contributions to tlie Library Fund, or presenting books direct-. % It was resolved to forward to Profeseor Dendy the congratulations of tho Institute on his election es a Feliow of the Rcyal Society.
