SAVE YOUR PENNIES.

A GOVERNMENT SCHEME. (raosr a correspondent.) ; WELLINGTON, May 5. The Government is evidently going to ! put into practice the homely old I adage of " Take caro of the i pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves. . It is more than probable that the paternal State is anxious to encourage pracI tices of thrift in the homes of tho ! people. • It will shortly embark on a i policy of collecting stray pence and shillings. The proposal is to place ! strong but cheap money-boxes in the home* of those people who desire to commence "saving up" in a small way, and when full tho receptacles will be ; taken to the nearest Savings Bank and j the will bo placed to the credit lof the owner. The keys of tho moneyj boxes will be in the custody of an officer of the State, so that once the money is sent through tho receiving slot it ! will be impossible to get it out without the aid of a magic key. At first it is understood persons will be required to I obtain boxes from a certain firm in I Wellington, which is prepared to sup- | ply them, but later on the Government may" acquire the stock and supply the article to intending "money-boxons" and give them a modest start on the road to affluence. Tho scheme is not a new one, it having had considerablo vogue in America.
