A MUNICIPAL MARKET.

DEPUTATION TO THE OTTY

COUNCIL,

At the meeting ot TTTe City Council last night, a deputation from the Political Labour League, consisting of Messrs Sullivan and Myers, waited on the Council with reference to the providing of a municipal meat, fish, and vegetable market. Mr Sullivan said a petition for the market had been very - numerously signed by workers and producers. The project had the support of the Trades and Labour Council, and all the Unions. There could "be no doubt ot tho desirableness of a municipal market, fhe producers could not get in touch with the purchasers, and both parties suffered. Tho producers had to pay high auction charges, etc. If a municipal market were established, he felt sure that it would be a great success. He felt 6uro if a systematic cani vass was made, they could get at least 10,000 signatures. In Melbourne the markets paid the .municipality, and were a great convenience to tho workers of the community. Mr J. S. Myers also spoke on the subject as a grower of produce for twenty-five years. He said he had tried the market project practically by standing in the street and selling his produce. The result of this had been most satisfactory, and he was sure that if- the municipal market wore established it would be a success. Another point -was that it would put a stoo to the Chinaman phase of the question. In reply to questions, Mr Myers said" that the Colosseum would do excellently for a market. They could have the fruit and vegetables in one part and fish and meat in another. He had taken as much as £16 in one day whilst standing in the street. The Mayor said that the Council would give the subject every consideration. It was true that they had power to establish a market, but they had no power to compel people to bring their produce to the market. There was a special committee set up wiui regard to the matter, but it had brought down no recommendation. No dcubt now the deputation had brought the matter up, the Chairman, Cr. Cooper, would call the committee together and dieouss tho matter. The deputation tnen retired. On the motion of Cr. Allison, it was resolved to refer the matter to the Market Committee to consider and report.
