MEETING OF LOCAL EXECUTIVE.

A meeting of the Exr-cutivo of tho Midland Railway League was held yesteiday afternoon in the Chamber of Commerce. Mr H. Quane presided. .Several telegrams weie received from .Sir Joseph Ward in reference to the Midland railway, and it was generally agieod that the date chosen for the Arthur's Pass tunnel contract celebrations—Tuesday, flay oth—would prove very satisfactory to the Canterbury public. The committee wero informed by tho Government that complimentary or free passes by the train or coach would not ho issued; as tho Government did not wish to establish a precedent in such cases. The Government, however, would provide a special train for the occasion, and the fares would bo at excursion rates.

Those who desire to attend the function will have to pay their own expenses. The invitations have been issued by tho West Coast Committee, and possibly some gentleman instrumental in forwarding tiiis work has been overlooked. If any such oversight has occurred, Mr H. Qua-ne, chairman of the Canterbury Committee, or Mr H. Antill Adley, secretary, will be only too willing to do all in his power to rectify the matter.
