SOCIAL DEMOCRATS AND THE LABOUR PARTY.
The Social Democratic- Conference at Manchester decisively rejected a proposal to affiliate with the Labour Party.
fThis is not the first time that an attempt has been made to unite these two forces working for Socialism. , The Labour party, though most of its members and nearly all its executive, are
avowed Socialists, contains some men who do not call themselves Socialists. The Socialism of the Labour Party is English, and does not refuse to advance by steps. The Socialism of the Social Democratic Federation is Continental, and "is always rather out of touch with the actualities of politics," to quote the "'Daily Mail' Year Book, ' "and attracts tho type of mind that prefers clear-cut principles to practical political progress. 5 " The Social Deiriocrafe are more uncompromising in. their attitude towards the existing order of things, and more violent in their denunciation of its evils. They are the oldest Socialist society in England, and their doctrines are German, being in fact, those of Karl Marx. One of the latest activities of the Federation is the distribution, of leaflets to the army urging soldiers to free themselves from tho tyranny of military Jaw. The Labour Party .would; not go to this length.]
