GOLF.

CANTERBTJBY AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP.

The Golf Tourr—ment was continued at the Shirley links en Saturday, the event being the Am&tour Golf Championship ot Canterbury, fcr a cha;l.ng» cup presented by ilr A. Hopkins, at present held by Uj C. Treweek. Concurrectiy with this event a handicap -was played, for which special prizes were awarded for the best net scores of each round. The licks were in. good order, and the improvement effected by the lengthening of the third acd fourth holes was much" appreciated, especially by the visitors from the scuih. Ihe winner of the championship, B. C. Rutherford, played a very steady game ail throujj, doing the first Tound in 79, ar.d the second in 82, giving » gross total of 161. The runnera-up, H. B. Lusk (Christchurch) and H. G. Wright (Timaru) were each two strokes behind the winner. Wright's first round was equal to the champion's, ar.d beat Lusk s by three, but m the .econd he fell away, taking 8. to get home. Th-e links wer. strango to tbo Dur-edin players, and this probably accounts for their failure to titovr proper form. The Dunedin crack, H. C. Smith, was clean off, taking 83 for the first round, and 91 for tho second. Ba*il Smith (Dunedin) pot up * very fair and consistent performance wrth 63 and 81, whioh waif the best from the Dunedin contingent. Salmon did the second round in 80, but his first round (92) put him hopelessly cut of a chance. H. D. Stronach played a very solid couplo of rounds for ■So ar.d 89. Last year's champion, C. Treeweek, lost his chance in th© firet round, which' he did in 91, but ha showed good form in the second, when he went round in 83. The handicap medal for tho first round was won by W. A. Humphreys (Christchurch) and the medal for the second by A. C. Fryer (Christchuroh). All the honours of the day thus rested with Canterbury players, but as the Dunedin men gain more" acquaintance with the course they s-hculd n_nr_x some ot the succeeding events.
