BAND OF HOPE CONTESTS.
The musical and elocutionary contests in connection with tho Canterbury Band of Hope Union were comnenced Inst evening in the Choral Hall, Mr J. T. Smith presiding. A lengthy programme was submitted, the following contestants from the Bands of Hope of the city and suburbs contributing items:—Pianoforte solosNellie Poore, Gladys E. Queree Elsie M Dohbs, Bertha Hannan, Gladys Hoppin. Irene Davidson, Emily Nightingale, Bessie Bell, and F. W. Caldon • recitations: Chas. Smith. Elsie Butter' field, W. A. Down, Gladys Armstrong, Ivy Empson, Louisa R. Burns, Emma Sweney, and Lizzie McFarlane- vocal solos: Hilda Cocker, Maud Strineer, Ivy Lawrence, Elsie Butterfield. and Dora Robinson.
The prire-winners wil! be announced to-night, when the contests will be continued.
