CLUB OPENINGS

Tavoured with magnificent weather, three of the bowling clubs of the city, the St. Albans, United and Sydenham, opened their season on Saturday. The greens were all in splendid order, the rain on Friday night having freshened them 113 well.

ST. ALBANS. A goodly gathering of ladies and gentlemen accepted tlie invitation of tbe president (Or. Downcs) to take pert in the opening of the green for the season. The guests were received by Dr. Downes end 3li€» Wyney. The President welcomed tho visitors, cud afternoon tea wee dispensed. The I'reaident, in the opening address, said that 'he had very fe|r*t-lt pleasure indeed in welcoming the visitors to the green. Tne club, he thought, had every reason to expect a successful seasou. fheir green, tennis courts, and croquet Uiwns were all in fine playing condition, and all that was wanted was that they shouW be able to .get a good accession to their membership. Dr. Downes then declared tbe season open. Cheers were given for the President, and six rinks having been formed tho usual match, President v Vice-Presi-dent, was commenced. There was a, good attendance of bowlers at the opening of the seoeou on tbe Sydenham Clubs green. The honours were done by. the President (Air Young), and Mrs Young sent down the tirst bowl of the season. The green was in good order, and the match President y. United Tennis, Bowling, and Cioquet Club opened .the season at their attractive grounds in Hagley Park oiv Saturday. The courts and greens were in excellent order, and several noticeable improvements have been made since last season. One of the greens has been re-laid, and . will shortly be. available for-match games. The tennis courts and croquet lawns were fully occupied," and some good play was shown. Qn the bowling green sides were chosen by the President and Vice-President, and a fairly close match resulted in a win for the Vice's team by 97 to 82. After formally declaring the season open, the President (Mr Ross) presented Mr J. T. Brown (a former president) with a set of sil* ver-mounted bowls, as a mark of the club's appreciation of the services rendered by him. The following are the rinke and scores :—

Beautiful weather favoured the opening of the bowling and croquet season at Kaiapoi on Saturday afternoon. There was a gathering of about 200 ladies and gentlemen in response to the invitations of. Mr R. Moore (president) and Mrs Moore, who kindly provided afternoon tea. Mr Moore, in a briet speech remarked that it was due to tho efforts of the father of bowling in Kaiapoi, Mr E. Parnham, that this game had become highly popular. The Rev. J. Holland had for a time lent tflie club a green, and now it had acquired the present property, on which there was „ comparatively email debt of £150, which was being paid off in instalments to the local Building .Society. He welcomed the visitors on behalf of the Bowling Club, and also on behalf of Mrs Parnham, president of the Croquet Club, and declared the greens open for play. Sin R. Moore rolled up the first bowl on tho green amid cheers. The following were the games:—
