INDUSTRIAL DISPUTE.

* BRICKLAYERS' AWARD. The award in the industrial dispute between the Bricklayers' Union and the Canterbury Builders' and. Contractors' Association has been filed with the Clerk of Awards. The award provides that the recognised hours of labour shall be from 8 a.m. till 5 p.m. on the i first five days of the week, and from 8 a.m. till noon on Saturdays, one hour to be allowed for dinner. Journeymen bricklayers are to be paid not less than Is 6d per hour, and overtime is to be paid for at the rate of time and a quarter for the first four hours, and time and a half afterwards, while double time is to be paid for work done on Sundays, Christmas Day, and Good Friday. All repairs to bakers' ovens in constant use to be paid double time rate. Provision is made for the payment of underrate workers, and the usual preference clause is inserted. The award also provides that all stop-, ping and pointing, cutting bricks or brickwork, or doing anything which requires the use of bricklayers' tools, shall be done by bricklayers only, provided a bricklayer is employed on the job. Apprentices are to be indentured for a period of five years, and the proportion of apprentices to journeymen is to be one to three. Apprentices are to be.paid 5s weekly for the first year, 10s for the second, 15s for the third, 20s for the fourth, and 25s for the fifth, but existing arrangements between an employer and apprentice before the date of the agreement becoming an award are not to be interfered with. Contractors are restrained from subletting brickwork labour only. The award is to operate from October 14th 1907, until October 14th, 1909.
