A deputation consisting of ifeesrs G. C. Smith, J. L. Wilson, and P. E. Bonn, waited on the Lyttelton Borough Council last night with reference to the question of obtaining the use ot the Council's recreation reserve on the Orphanago site in West Lyttelton, for the purpose of laying down a bowling green.

Mr Smith explained that a committee had been formed, and it was intended to'call a public meeting for the purpose of forming a Howling Club. It vns expected that the laying down of a four-rink bowling green and tho erection of the necessary buildings would involve an expenditure of something like £200. The object of tho deputation was to endeavour to obtain from the Council an assurance that the Club would have some security of tenure of tho section if the members went to the expense of laying down the green. Mr Rean said he represented the Tennis Club, who were desirous of laying down two tennis courts on tho reserve. Doubt was expressed as to whether there was sufficient room on the section for both a four rink bowling green and two tennis courts.

The Mayor (Mr S. R. Webb) pointed out that under the Municipal Corporations Act the Council had no power to lease recreation grounds to any particular body. The public had the right to go upon euch grounds at any time. The Council, however, had the power to make a by-law to protect the interests of the Bowling Club and tlio Tenuis Club in the ground. The best course would be for the committees representing the bowling people and the Tennis Club to confer with the Estates Committee, with the object of making satisfactory arrnngements. The deputation then withdrew.

The question, which had also come beforo tho Council in tho form of a letter from the Bowling Committee, was referred to the Estates Gommitteo, to confer with, the parties concerned, and report at tho next meeting of the Council. i
