FIRES.
A fi.ro occurred at an early hour this morning in a five-roomed house in Fairfield avenue, off Windmill road, Sydenham, belonging to Mr Rogers, 'lite occupants (a man and his wife and child) woke up to discover that tfte back portion of tho building was in* flames, and they bad barely time to fet out. The chemicals from Sydcnam and Lichfiold stroet wont out. and two lines of water from tho higlif pressure water-supply were got on to the flames. The promisee were gutted before tho outbreak was extinguished. There was a strong wind blowing, and this oafieed considerable danger to tfie adjoining houses of Mr Wood and 1 Mr Stapleton. The flames, however, were prevented from ' spreading to them. siot much of tho furniture waa saved from the burned house. The insurances were:—£3oo in tne State Office on tho building, and £luo in the Manchester on the furniture.
