CHLOROFORM IN DENTISTRY.

TO T_E EDITOR OP "THE TBESS." Sir—ln your issue of to-day's date yon record the death under chloroform administered for dental purposee of nn unfortunate person at Invercargill. May I bo allowed to state that -there are no circumstances which justify the administration of chloroform for the extraction of tooth. As ono who hos had considerable experience in a London dental hospital in tho role thetist, I have never seen chloroform administered for purely extraction cases. With ethyl chloride, ana-thesis enn be induced for nearly ten minutes if necessary, and, given with proper precautions, thero is littlo danger of nfatal result. I should strongly advise all person, who aro recommended by their dentist to tako chloroform for teeth extraction to refuse absolutely. Tbo use, or rather the abuse of chloroform for minor operations, whether in dentistry or 6urgery is a practice—. purely colonial—that cannot bo too fonuly condemned.—Yours, etc., M.D. .; Christchurch, June 10th.
