THE NEW THEOLOGY.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THE TRESS." Sir,—ln your issuo of tho 6th inst "Presbyter" takes exception to what I wroto. He pays mo a groat compliment, I think, for he attacks mc, but makes no remarks about what you say the Bishop of ltocheeter said. He is very indignant at my calling tho IJiblical account of tho fall of man a "legend." Dr. Annandalo's Dictionary defines "legend" as any marvellous story handed down from early times; a tradition; a non-historic narrative. The fall of man is a marvellous story, handed down from early times; it is a non-historic narrative; therefore it is a tradition err 'legend. Q.E.D. The clergy have first to prove tho truth of the fall of man, for if there was no fall, no redemption or Redeemer was necossar/-. Belief won't do; wo require proof. I don't pretend to bo a theologian, but I have read somewhat, and know something of tho "pious frauds" of tho Christian Church. "Presbyter" and myself will "agree to differ," as tho Irishman said, and I thank you kindly for publishing what I have written. —Yours, etc., June 7th. C.W.B.
