WAIMAKARIRI-ASH LEY WATER SUPPLY.
Tho water at tho head works of the service from Brown's Rock will be cut off for a few days whilst tho races are cleaned and the head works attended to for the season. Tho recent rains will assist to provide water for sheep till the water is again turned on. The supply in wells continues to decrease, and thoso whose wells have io bo sunk lower say that tho present is ono of the very driest seasons they have ever known. Ono person pointed out the hills were clear of snow, and had been for a considerable time. Another suggested to our representative that the destruction of the forests was possibly the cause of a decreased rainfall on tile hills whence tho wells draw their supplies. dry wells, met with in tho Oxford, Ciist, West Eyreton, and Eyroton districts, vary in depth from 12ft to 40lt. Attempts have been mado to sink tubo wcjls, but havo not been successful. A depth of over 200 ft was tried at Swannanoa many years since, but a flow was not obtained.
