"Mr J. B. Callan is a wellknown citizen, although the same may be said of him as of Mr Smcla.r. that he has not made a point of actively participating in public matters. Ho is known iargejy in a public capacity througih his association with tho Irish question when this has been discussed, and meetings held to listen to thc representatives of th? various delearates that have come from the OM Country to speak on behalf of Home Rule. "As far hack as 25 years ago he r>i\-.i*d at Mr J. P. Redmond's meeting at the old Queen's Theatre in Dunedin. Ho is a prominent, though quiet member of tho Roman Cntlmiic Church. He recently retired from legal firm of Callnn nnd Galloway. He practice was mc.stk confined to consultation anrl Chamber work. Ho is a ready speaker, and a good d-bater, ana highly respected man of independent means.
