MR C. M. LUKE.
Mr Charles Manley Luke, ironfounder, was born in Pen_anoe, Cornwall. He received his education at the Wosleyan Day School iv his native town, and finally at tlie Penzance Grammar School. Mr Luke has always been studiously inclined. His researches have been of no small order, embracing a wide range of subjects. Mr Luke has worked very hard in the interests of Wellington, and has taken an active interest in temperance and social movements. Ho was elected Mayor of Wellington at the end of 1894 by a substantial majority, and without having previously occupied a seat in the City Council. At the end of his term of office, Mr Luke stood for election to the House of Representatives, but was defeated by Mr George Fislrer. He is chairman of the Wellington Hospital Board, in which capacity he has rendered excellent service. *
