PACIFIC LINER WRECKED

MONGOLIA ASHORE AT MIDWAY ISLAND.

United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright.

(Received September 18th, 11.35 p.m.) LONDON. September 18. The Pacific Mail Company's liner Mongolia, from Hong Kong to San Francisco, is ashore at Midway Island. Her hull is pierced in the bow, and she is resting on tho rocks. The passengers havo beon landed, and tho cargo is being discharged. Tlie accident was due to tidal phenomena. Tho value of her cargo far exceeds that on the steamer Manchuria. The latter vessel has been refloated at a cost of £200 (?). [Midway Island ie a very small, bare island some distance to the north-west of the Sandwich lslandsT It is used as a cable station, the officers leading a very lonely existence, as the place is a little off the track of steamers. Readers of R. L. Stevenson's "The Wrecker," will remember that Midway Island is the place whore tho tragedy of the Flying Scud occurred, and where Loudon Dodd went to search the vessel's cargo. The Manchuria, a sister ship to the Mongolia, went ashore not long ago on tho coast of Hawaii, the accident being attributed to abnormal currents.]
