MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE.

(PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGBAM.) WELLINGTON, September 5. Tlie Municipal Conference was continued to-day. A motion in favour oP the passing of the Fire Brigades Bill was rejected Tor the following amendment :—"That, in the opinion of this Conference, municipal councils are bodies which should retain the management of fire brigades, and it will be sufficient if Parliament decides tliat insurance companies should pay part of the cost of inaintonance of fire brigades, and that Clause 60 of the Municipal Corporations Act. 1900, be amended to enable insurance companies to take part in tho management of the brigades." A number of remits were referred to the Executive Committee. A remit in favour of State businesses contributing voluntarily to the rates was passed. It was decided to recommend that all municipal bodies should, close their offices for a fortnight at Christmas, to secure a umiform holiday. A number of remits of minor importance were adopted, and the Conference adjourned till to-morrow.
