PREVENTION OF CRUELTY.

The committee cf the Society f.>r tho Prevention of Cruelty to Animals met on Tuesday, when thoro wero present the J.ev. \\. V. Oliver (.in the chair), Mrs Town-send, Misses Freeman, Smith and Morrow, Messrs W. Prudhoo. D. B. McLaren, W. Spillor, Cr. T. Thomas, W. Stronach and li. Hardcast.e. The Inspector reported that lio had given thirteen cautions during the month. A caee of gross cruelty had been reported in connection with tho conveyanco of a sow by rail, and he was making enquiries. PetitioJi6 against livo pigeon bhootiiig had been forwarded to Auckland, Wellington, Hawke's Bay and Dunedin. A largo number of signatures had been obtained to the petition here, and ho recommended that a paid caaivassor ahould be appointed to secure additional namca. No reply had been received from tho Canterbury Jockey Club as to the provision of proper appliances for tho destruction of fatally injured horses at race meetings, and tho provision of a horse ambulance. It seemed to him almost incredible that a horse had been allowed to compote, at one of the late races whilst suffering from acute lameness. The result of this, according to his informant, was that tho a_iimal sustained a fracture of the fetlock through having to place undue weight upon one leg owing to the pain antl tenderness caused by the lame one. The report was received. It was decided to apply to tho Government for tho subsidy on tho bequest recently received by the society. Tho Town Clerk forwarded, a report from the manager of the abattoirs, denying the ins-pector'a allegations as to tho starving of stock. The Inspector stated that he still held to tine statement that he had made. Further than that, ho had called the attention of the manager to the bad state of the pig-styes, amd urged that some straw should bo put into them. Tho manager said that if a letter were written he would lay it before the committee. When he • visited' the abattoirs ho found that no straw had been put into the styes. After some discussion, it was resolved that a circular letter should be sent to the contract slaughtermen, asking them to feed the cattle kept over twenty-four hours at the abattoirs. It was resolved that it bo a recommendation to the incoming committee to re-engage, Mr Zouoh as secretary and inspector. Tho Treasurer (Miss Morrow) read tho an>n.iial balance-sheet, showing a caeili balance ia hand of £45 8« lid and a deposit of £300. The assets wore £475 153 Bd, and the liabilities nil. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mies Morrow. It was resolved: —"That a reply be sent to the City Council to the effect that the action of tho inspector with referonoa to the abattoirs is fully borne out by the evidence brought before the committee." It was decided to hold the annual meeting on September 25th, and to ask Sir John HaOl to preside.
