OTTAWA, May 19
Mr Preston, the Canadian Emigration Commissioner in England, gave sensational evidence before the Dominion Parliamentary ocmmitteo on colonisation. Relating the history of the inception of the North Atlantic Trading Company, he declared that after Lord Strathcona and Mr J. G. Colmer, Secretary to the Canadian High Commissioner, held a meeting with tho steamship agents in Hamburg in 1898 to di.scuea the enlargement of the field of Continental emigration to Canada, Baron Hatzfield, then ucrraan Ambassador in England, was instructed that unices Lord Strathcona was able satisfactorily to explain his action, it was inadvisable that Lord (Strathcona should return to Germany.
Mr Preston understood that the explanation made through Lord Salisbury was that German laws would not be transgressed. Mr Preston added that the company was formed, Continental hooking agents b?iug pledged not to violate the laws of the conn cries wherein they operated. The names of those associated in tho matter were kept secret. Mr Fielding, Minister of Finance, announced in the Dominion Parl.ament that Lord Siratiicona had written declaring that tho contract with the company and the names were confidential.
