FAIRLIE SHOW.

The eight- annual e_di_rjeition under the auspices of tlie Mackenzie County Agricult unal Society ivas held at Fairlie yesterday in beaaitdftilly fine weather, and in the presence of tho largest gathering of spectators ever seen on the Fairlie show grounds. A special train ran up from Timaru and took a very large number of visitors, tihe train being the longest that had ever drawn up at tihe Fa-iu-lie railway station, and it carried visitors from as far south as Oamaru. The gate takirngp at the show were £70 18s, as compared with £45 (then a record) last yea.r. Tlie sheep pens were filled wit_ some typical animals, breeding ewea and freezers heiiiig cspccial'ly good. Mr J. E. Goodwin's clhatlonge cup for long wool lamb(freezers) was won by J. Trotter, Mr W. Grant's cup for most points in the sheep classes gaing U> W. F. Ha-inil-ton, of Aslirwick station. Some good Shorthorn catcnle -were exhibited, tiha milch and the fats b.itig of outstanding merit. The Laitter included some beasts w!hie_, When on the hooks, will scale nwiiiiiing share of 140011b or 15001b. There wero l-eoord entries in • all' sections of the show, with the exception, of the horse section, where there was a falling off, both in iMimbc-n? and in quality. The draughts were a fair lot, the prize for the ohamp:on mare going to J- Bray. In hg <t horses W. F. Hamilton, of Ashwick Station, was most successful, scoring first and second for singlo liarncfs horse over 15 hands, first for harness ho _3 under 15 hands, first and second for tandem team, and first 'for pair buggy horses. The best pection ot the snow was undoubtedly the ponies, a number of typical little animals coming under review. Sporting and sheep dogs were shown in goodly numbers, and while the quality of tho former was hardly up to show standard it would be difficult to get together at any similar show in the colony a bet'er lot of sheep dogs. All kinds of farm and garden produce were in strong evidence, and this furnished striking testimony to tho fertility ,of the district. Of pigs there wero a few Berkshires of a good type. Farm implements and light vehicles also found a place on the ground*. The jumping by nuntere was not of any great merit. Messrs Harper and Ensor's Kangaroo took first in class "to carry 11 stone," and also in that for 12 stone, while A. Beattie's Kauri took first in heavy-weights.
