THE HOLIDAY.

The weather for tho holiday yesterday was beautifully fine; in fact, it is many years since such a continuance of favourable weather has been experienced at this season. The result was that a very largo number of people took advantage of tlie outing, and the various holiday resorts were crowded to excess. Cathedral square up to noon presented a very busy scene, tor in addition to the ordinary holiday traffic, which was a record, thero was tho racecourse traffic on the Riccarton line. It is estimated that about 2000 passongers were carried to the Riccarton racecourse, every oar being packed. Eighty carloads were despatclied to Sumner, and the oars to Wamoni, New Brighton, and Cashmere Hills carried a record number of passengers. Tho work of conveying such a large number of people was made far moro difficult by the shortness of oars, and as Mr Wood remarked last night, he could have done with thirty more cars on the various lines. The greatest credit is due to Mr Wood and tho tramway employees generally for tho efficient manner in which the exceptionally heavy traffic was handled. Tho people were got away with as much expedition as possible, and it is satisfactory to record that, not a single accident of any kind occurred. The fineness of the weather induced the largest turn out at the Band of Hope Demonstration that has been seen for many years. The Inter-University sports at Lancaster Park attracted a large number of visitors, and some excellent racing was witnessed. - Tlie C.J.C. Meeting -was largely attended, and there were more visitors from the other parts of the colony than at any previous Easter Meeting. The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association continued its championship meeting on the Linwood courts, the weather being ideal for tennis playing. The delegates attending the Trades and Labour Conference had a very successful picnic to Governor's Bay, which was also thronged) with other visitors. Cashmere Hills and Victoria Park attracted a goodly number, and New Brighton and Sumner were filled to overflowing, also Wainoni Park. Sports wero held at Allandale, Kaiapoi, Hawarden, Chortsey, and Crust, and generally the holiday was well observed. In the evening the Theatre, the Canterbury* Hall, and the Opera House had all holiday audiences. Beautiful weather favoured the holiday at Timaru, and there was a considerable exodus from the town by rail to Fairlie for the Show, and Temuka for the sports.
