THE RECENT STORM AT NORFOLK ISLAND.

EXTENT OP THE DAMAGE. The Norfolk Island correspondent of the "New Zealand Herald," writing on April 3rd, states that the island was visited hy a storm of exceptional violence on the night of March 20th, and the following morning, which did considenaible damage to p_*qpe*nty all over the island. Pine trees were uprooted, and the roads covered, with falling branches and pine cones. In town the verandah- fell, the two boiling-houses were unroofed, and a small house blown down. In the country several verandahs were blown dtwn, tho mission station lost two chimneys and some iron off the roofs, and at the cable station most of the outbuildings wero unroofed, and the place covered with debris. It was at"the Cascade that the most damage was done, tho landing-place being hardly recognisable. Everything was turned upside down, and nothing was visible but a huge heap of large boulders. Tlie road, too, was badly damaged, and the embankment in front of No. 1 oil shed completely washed away. The scene at the Cascade next morning was something appalling. The sea was rolling in mountains high, sweeping the road as far an the old boiling-house, and moving about huge boulders like .matchboxes. Notice of the approach of the storm was received from Captain Edwin," of Wellington. Emergency parties have been put on to effect repairs at the Cascade, the ' mission responding to the call with a large party of boys. A new embankment is in process of formation, and a temporary landing-place is being got readv> but to put the place in proper repair again, or in the condition it war? before the storm, will entail'considerable expense for materials and weeks of hard labour.
