RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES.

Thursday. Though there had been scarcely any frost during the might, a very cod southerly wind was blowing at sucri&e this morning, and it was a case, so far as the track-watchers were concerned, of shoulders up to the ears until after the breakfast adjournment. Lady Wayward was the first horw to be stripped, and her trainer sent her out to do a mile at three-quarter pace. Clanchattan got through a working gallop over ton furlongs on the plough, the last eight of which he ran in lmin 4Sscc. Ohryseis strode over a imhi at three-quarter paco, and Signalman iMcCiuskey'i. who was assisted by Cannie Chiel and Snowstel, left seven furlongs behind him on the plough in lmin a. 1-oth sec. He was timed from a wa.king start, and considering the weight he carried, his performance was a fairly credjtable one. Starshcct beat Boomerang by ten lengths ever a mile and a quarter on the grass in 2min 11 l-sth sec, finishing well within himself. Boomerang appeared to be choking as he passed the winning post and made such an extraordinary noi;e that more than one traineT present went down to meet him after he had puLed up thinking that be might ha?e burst a blood-vessel. lie sfmed to be a.'., right, however, and Quinlivan remarked that he has frequently given vent to similar sounds before. Stronghold ran six furlongs at three-quarter pace, and Red Gauntlet (L. G. King) easiiy accounted ior seven furioncs on the plough in lmin 34soc. Ivanofi and Field Gun did not over exert themselves whilst galloping six furlong* on the plough

in lmin 19 l-3th boo, a distance which Cross Battery (Jaa. Pine), who was as wido out as she could get, T»n with the utmost ease in lmin 18 3-oth sec. Somaroff (F. Yarr) was extended ov«t a mile and a quarter on tho plough, the loirt mile bein" truverjed in lmin 50 3-sth sec Franc showed a lot of pace tor two furlongs, and alter bauig steadied down in the straight he completed six in lmin 18 2-sth sec Hemlock and Pas Seul, carrying about even weights, set out for a gai.op over seven furlongs on the plough, and the filly got home a length to the good in lmin 33sec. Mr H. A. Knight was down from ltacecourse Hi.l with the object of seeing Lapland tried over the Champagne Stakes journey. The oolt, who was ridden by Jus. Pine, had Watershoot (F. Yarr) as a companion, and jumping away irom a standing start, about three lengths on the near side of the mark, he completed his task in Imm 1" 4-sth sec. It was a fair performance, but hardly good enough to bring him into favour 'for the Champagne biases.

After breakfast Makaroff galloped seven fur.ongs. Ability spurted half a mile on the grass in 51 2-sth sec and Khania rattled a.ong over about half a ini.o round the bottom e-nd of the plough track. Quickfir© ran the last seven 01 eight furlongs on the p.wugh in lmui S3 2-olti ccc. an<l Martian, Xsitsihar and Assegaa wore associated in a circuit at a strong half-pace. Heirloom easily left seven furlongs behind him on tho grass in lmin 38 2-Sth sec, and Czarevna was not. fully extended whilst running six furlongs on the plough in company _with Lee-ilnfie.d in lmin -2i l-sth sec. Korea* Bagpipes, and Handel wore apparently meant to start off together opposite the seven furlong disc. The first-named, however, got a break on her stable mates, and easily ran home in front in lmin 37 l-sth sec. Highland Fling was very tired as he covered tho last furlong of a mi.c on tho grass, and Sychcm easily beat Not us over seven furlongs on the same track in lmin 33 2-sth sec. Phaetontis ar.d Magnificent sprinter four furlongs arter doing steady excroise, and Rongoa waa no use to Beau Soaton as the pair galloped once round the grass track. Hilarity sprinted half a mi.o on the grass in 53soc, and Convoy and Lady Landon easily ran the last four of six furlongs in similar time. Ne.ther Patty Pan nor Alexis was all out whnst galloping six furlongs on tho plough in lmin 21&oc. and Tirole went a mite art three-quarter pace. Chivalry was not extended, but S.ow Tom waa kept busy whLst sprinting half a nulo on the plough in 51 3-sth sec. Narcissus h*ld The Mohioaji quite safe over a curcuit on the plough, the last six furlongs being traversed in lmin 23sac. 'ihe Mohican was very sore, and Narcissus was slightly lame as he pulled up. Apollodoris tG-askil!) had more to Bay than Petrovna at the oonc.usion oi a six furlong gal.oo on tho grass in lmin 16 2-sth sec. The "Hon. Geo. McLean's oolt pleased tho touts, and undoubtedly went well. Terrapm spurted four furiongs on tho grass in 49 4-sth sec. Graduated Tax (J. Nolan) and Burus (D. Moraghan) gave a finished display of fencing over five flights of hurdles, King Stork ran the last four of five furlongs in 53Jsec, and Stepdanoer (F. Jonts) galloped a mile and a quarter on the p.ough m 2min 17sec. Piibroch's daughter got over the last milo in lmin 49 l-sth sec, but she does not appear to be going quito as froeiy as sho did at Dunedin Cup time. The Seer (MoCombe) did half-pace work, and Koputaa (F. Yarr) ran Bix furlongs on the grass in lmin 19sec. Aimee Soult ran the last four of five furlongs on the grass in 50 2-51'h eeo, and Stratagem, who had a light weight up, boat Pretty Face by two lengths over five furlongs on the plough, after running the distance from a standing start in lmin 4. 4-sth sec. Do Witte (V. Cotton) finished a length and a half in front of Ga.lantry (Moduskev) at the end of six furlongs on tho plough, negotiated from a standing start in lmin 21sec. The oolt has the most pace, but tho filly seems to be the bertter stayer, and sticks to her work very gamely. Friday. There was an exceedingly $harp frost last night. A fair sprinkling of touts were present this morning, but they saw very few horses do anything beyond half pace exercise. Chryseis was given a working gallop over six furlongs on the plough. Boomerang 1 (Jenkins )waa going stronger than Starshoot (Danahay) art the conclusion of a gallop over six fur.ongs on tho plough, the pair having mn that distance in lmin 17 l-st£ soc. This waa a very fair performance, the resolute manner in which Boomerang handled himself being distinctly impressive. Achilles (Jenkins) easily traversed four furlongs on the plcugh in 50 2-oth sec, and Tetai (Jenkins) had no difficulty in getting over the same ground in 52 2-Sth 6ec. Achilles looka very fit, and is undoubtedly moro muscular than when he last vis;ted Riccarton.

After breakfast Quickfiro did a working ga.lop over a milo and a quarter. Sychem easily beat Notus over half a mile on tho pras3 in 51.50 c. Savoury and Delaware moved freely whilst running four furlongs in company in £0 2-sth sec, after doing same steady pacing, but Savoury subsequently appeared to be e%ht!y sore as he trotted across tho centre of the course. Huascax (Hewitt) beat Highland Reel by six or eight lengths in a sprint over three furlongs. Munjeet, Porcelain. Seal Rock, Soltykoff, and Edna May were allotted easy tasks. Possibly it may be his natural action, but Poroelain seemed ts stride a bit short (is ho cantered round. Antigone and Farley Grove were not fuV.y expended whilst running six furlongs on the plough in lmia 19 4-sth pec. '■ Convoy (M«Guire) and Lady Landon (Derrett) brc»ke away opposite the milo and a quarter <Kso on the plough, and after going tSree furlonga the filly was pulled off. Convoy ran out the full ten furlongs, and registered tho following times en route:—Two furlongs 25 3-sth sec, four 52sec, five lmin 6sec, six lmin 20 2-Sth «ec, ten 2min 17 l-sth sec. As will be seen, he gradually went slower and slower, and though it is probable, judging by the hit of a spurt he made over the last fifty yards when his trainer waved MeGiiire on, that he would have put up better time if he had been assisted over the last six furlongs, hia effort was not a satisfactory one.
