THE HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE. (HUM _MO__TION t_L_Oß__.) . _, WELLINGTON, March 5. Ths Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commiw-tiper, dated London, March 4th:—"The mutton market is steady. Shipments now arriving are very small, only 3500 carcases coming forward during the last fortnight. The average price to-day for Canterbury mutton is 4ld per lb; the average price for North Island u> 4Jd per lb. The lamb market is quiet. The average price for Canterbury is s|d per lb; for other brands than Canterbury 5Jd per lb. There is no alteration, in the beef market since last week. The butter market is steady for choicest brand- at 107s per cwt. There is less demand- for medium qualities owing to the good supply on hand. Danish is quoted at 116s. The cheese market is firm, with an improved demand for coloured at 635, and white at 62s per cwt. The hetap market is quiet, but a good feeling prevails. The prioe on spot to-day for g.f.a.q. Wellington is £32 10s per ton; March* June shipments, £31 10s. The price of Manila hemp,- fair current grade, on spot, to-day, is £41 10s per ton. The cocksfoot seed market is firm, with an upward tendency. The average price for bright clean New Zealand cocksfoot seed, weighing 171b per bushel, on spot, to-day is 56s per cwt. Tho wool market is strong. All stocks are advancing. AMBERLEY. There was a largo attendance of buyers at the Amberley market yesterday. Satisfactory rates obtained, and the entry of 25,000 sheep was cleared. Fat lambs made 13s lOd to 14s lid. The principal sales were:—For G. A. McLean, 38 at 13s lOd; J. E. Watson, 74 at 14s 6d; F. Newton, 37* at 14s 7d; W. H. Hale, 171 at 14s lOd; H. McLean, 267 at 13s lOd; A. W. Byroh, 920 at 14s lid; May Bros., 38 at 14s 8d; James Shaw, 96 at 14s lOd; W. McAdam, 22 at 14s 9d; A. Boyes, 21 at 14s 9d. Fat wethers made 17s 3d to 18s, 124 being sold for J. Shaw .at 17s Id. Fat ewes made lis to 13s lOd, and fat merino ewes 10s Bd. Leading lines of store sheep were as follows.— -For Glenrmark station, 279 halfbred -*wes at 18s 4d, 377 three-quarterbred cv**« 17s (id to 17s 9d, 807 at 17s to 17s Id, 1000 four-year-old merino ewes 10s; for J. J. Fairweather, 169 four and six-tooth halfbred ewes 21s, 134 fouir-yeax-old ewes 17s 7d; for J. H. Hall (Motanau), 147 two-tooth ewes 16s lid, 483 eound-mouthed halfbred ewes 16s od; for W. Hyde (Cheviot), 243 sound-mouthed halfbred ewes 17s; for D. Archibald, 650 soundmouthed helfbred ewes 16s sd; for L. Reams, 167 two-tooth ewes 17s 4d, 231 sound-mouthed halfbred ewes 16s lid; for W. Hartnell, 106 two-tooth ewes 17s 9d; for Stoneyhurst, 349 merino ewes 9s 7d, 1257 halfbred ewes 20s to 20s 3d, 292 three-quarterbred ewes 20s 4d; for Courage's estate, 875 two-tooth ewes 20s 3d to'2os 4d, 406 ttiree-quar-terbred ewes 15s lOd, 554 halfbred ewes 15s lid 556 two-tooth halfbred ewes 20s od; for H.
