THE GOVERNMENT'S POLICY.
WAGES IN DOCKYARDS. (Received March 2nd, 10.15 p.m.)
LONDON, March 2
Mr Robertson, Parliamentary Secretary to tlie Admiralty, in presenting the Estimates, said that the Government adopted the plans of their predecessors without prejudice. He promised that Earl Cawdor's memorandum would be given a fair trial.
[This memorandum was the one issued just before the. late Government went out of office, and contained many highly important statements of Admiralty policy, such as the reduction in tho Estimates and the building programmo of four armoured ships a year.]
An amendment by tho Labour Party regarding the Trade Union rate of wages in the dockyards has been withdrawn, assurances having been given that the Government accepted the principle, though they must consider the differences between dockyard and outside work.
The votes for the personnel and wages have been agreed to.
CANADA AND NAVAL DEFENCE. OTTAWA, March 2. Canada, in taking over the Halifax dockyards, will.pay the Admiralty £2000 annually for five years.
