THE ANGLO-CATHOLIC TEMPERANCE COLUMN.

EPISCOPAL UTTERANCES. HIS GRACE THE ARCHBISHOP OF YORK ON TEMPERANCE AGITATION. At a recent meeting held in Sheffield, in furtheiance of the Church of England Temperance Society, the Archbishop thus expressed himself: "As long as this terrible iniquity of drinking prevails to its present extent, we may preach from all our pulpits, we may orfret our schools ali over the land, and wo may make elaborate social arrangements, but we shall never bo able to bring the people to tho moral height wo desire. My hopes lie in diffusing serious and sober thought about tho matter. There was a time when I thought the Church .of Eng'and itse"f was a great Temperance Society; because, as there would be no religion without Temperance I considered it imneces ary to have a special society to further that which it was the very object of the Church to promote. I now see, however, the necessity tor a spec'al organisation charged witH attending to the question of temperance. I declare, in th© name of Freedom as well as in the name of Education, tliat we of the Church of England must awaken all to this great and crying evil oi intemperance. We must recollect that wo ar© ministers to tlio souls of men, and that at th© very groundwork of Christianity lie the words, 'Deny thyself.' This maxim is not for ono class, but for nil." CHURCHWOMEN AND CHURCHMEN, will you do your duty in th's matter? on tho 6th inst., NEXT WEDNESDAY. 9
